Cleaning Out My Bookshelves & Giveaway

There comes a time in life when you just need to get rid of a few things. Stuff that´s been lying around in some dust covered corner for ages. Things you once admired but then forgotten about.

I do this. And I do this with books, too.

I know, I know. Shame on me for treating books as if they´re just objects. Things I can toss without another thought.

But I don´t toss books aside. The truth is- I just don´t want to keep books that weren´t fully my cup of tea. So, I give them away. Usually, I just give all my sorted out paperbacks to my bestie, Mirjam, but this time I had something else in mind.

Why not do a GIVEAWAY? An international one ( because I hate, yes, HATE when giveaways aren´t international ( you´re welcome to read my reasons for that here )

It´s time to share. It´s time to give.

Let´s face it, books are expensive. Paperback prices from self published authors have gone up and hardly anyone can afford a hardcover these days. It´s best to just “pay it forward” and make someone happy, right?

And the best part? This giveaway is NOT your typical giveaway. No one has to participate in a game / quiz or answer questions to enter. The first to claim a book in the comments will receive said book. Voila! No strings attached.

Book Review: Sparrow – L. J. Shen

synopsis single

Troy Brennan

Every southie in Boston knows that name. The son of a dead mobster. The heart throb with steel blue eyes. “The Fixer” who can make or break you in this city.

Oh, and my new husband.

Sparrow Raynes

That’s me. No one seemed to remember my name up until he barged into my life.
But then he caged me.
Kidnapped me.
And killed every chance I had to runaway from the place where we grew up.
Put simply, Troy Brennan clipped my wings.

I have dreams, big ones, but I doubt he’d ever let me chase them. I have no idea why he’d decided to take me as his wife. But I do know this: pissing off this man will not do me any good. At all.

Warning Label Copied From Goodreads
Sparrow is a standalone, full-length novel. It contains graphic violence and adult situations some may find offensive.

My Thoughts 2

I think I would have had a different reading experience if I had read `Sparrow` by L. J. Shen before I read the authors other, more recent mafia romance novel The Kiss Thief.

I enjoyed reading `Sparrow`. I liked how dark it was and how vivid the author had Sparrowpainted her scenes for her readers. The only thing that bothered me ( and this is just my personal feeling ) was that I felt this  one wasn´t as strong as The Kiss Thief. If I compare the two books ( which I can because they´re very much alike ) I can say that `Sparrow` felt more like a test version for me. And this isn´t a negative thing.

What I appreciated most…

  • The writing. L. J. Shen is a master of her craft. Her stories are clear and straight forward. The author’s ability to create just enough angst to keep a reader on the edge of their seats is great. Good writing is the key to good story telling.

  • The story. I´m a sucker for mafia romances. Everything is fierce. Fierce love. Fierce hate. Fierce relationships…  In `Sparrow`everything was fierce and dangerous. I didn´t quite get the Scarface – Tony Montana vibes but there were some things I really liked about the mafia world the author created.

Unfortunately, the good always comes with the stuff I didn´t quite like:

What I didn´t appreciate…

  • The characters lack of feelings. This is not to say they were emotionless. The Hero and Heroine had their fair share of feelings but for me, this couple… they were too tough. Tough cookies are great but I need that emotional balance. I clearly saw the affection these characters had for each other and I understood how these people came to be who they were but I needed some softness to even out the toughness.
  • The ending. There was nothing wrong with the ending. It was completely fine. Just not something I like to see happen for characters. The ending wasn´t for me.

With that being said – I still enjoyed `Sparrow`. I think it´s a great, exciting dark romance with juicy bits that´ll get any romance reader hooked.

Would I recommend this book? Yes.

Would I reread this book? Probably, yes. There are parts that are totally reread worthy.

The Cover – 2 Stars:  The flames. I´m not sure why they needed to be on the cover because the wing works wonders on it´s own. The blue background, the black feathers with the white font would have been a total eye catcher.

The Story – 4 stars:  What can I say that I haven´t said already? I liked it. Dark, gritty, fierce and sexy.

The Characters – 3 stars:  That extra softness was missing. But other than that I enjoyed their characters.

My emotional state after finishing this read:  Satisfied.

Book Review: The Kiss Thief – L.J Shen

synopsis single

They say your first kiss should be earned.

Mine was stolen by a devil in a masquerade mask under the black Chicago sky.

They say the vows you take on your wedding day are sacred.

Mine were broken before we left church.

They say your heart only beats for one man.

Mine split and bled for two rivals who fought for it until the bitter end.

I was promised to Angelo Bandini, the heir to one of the most powerful families in the Chicago Outfit.

Then taken by Senator Wolfe Keaton, who held my father’s sins over his head to force me into marriage.

They say that all great love stories have a happy ending.

I, Francesca Rossi, found myself erasing and rewriting mine until the very last chapter.

One kiss.
Two men.
Three lives.
Entwined together.

And somewhere between these two men, I had to find my forever.

My Thoughts 2

Oh, my expectations were set high for this one. I´m talking sky high. And because this book has been so hyped and praised I was also terrified of being disappointed.

Beautiful cover and a decent synopsis? I just had to give it a go.

To make a long story short: I wasn´t as disappointed as I thought I´d be. I´m truly not mad at this one because the story almost has everything I want in a contemporary romance novel.

Personally, I thought the story was a tiny bit less dramatic than the synopsis suggested. I was thinking there would be an open Chicago love triangle war in `The Kiss Thief` by L. J. Shen. I didn´t have the impression there was one at all.

The Kiss Thief

That´s not to say this book didn´t have other qualities. `The Kiss Thief` had many things I usually appreciate when reading romances.

What I Appreciated Most

  • Character depth. For me, there´s nothing worse than having to read about characters who don´t offer something that makes them special. Wolfe Keaton and Francesca Rossi are powerful main characters who are entertaining from start to finish.
  • Unpredictable actions. I´d be lying if I said the book was unpredictable, because… Well, the ending was sort of a given. But some of the events were actually unpredictable. I certainly never saw certain scenes happening but I´m really glad they did.
  • The dialogue. Very intelligent and quick. I like when characters have something to say to each other rather than having them repeat their thoughts.
  • Enemies to lovers romance. I´m a sucker for this trope.

What I Would Have Liked

  • It says in the book description

“… mine split and bled for two rivals who fought for it until the bitter end.”

“One kiss. Two men. Three lives.”

This is not entirely misleading but I did feel like it suggested there would be an actual love triangle going on. There wasn´t. Yes, there were two men involved in Francesca´s life but one of those men wasn´t present enough to be considered as a third party.

  • A more powerful ending. After so much that went down in this book I did expect a little more CRASH BOOM BANG in the end. There was a really fantastic build up and at some point there was a constant and stable peak. Then the nose dive.
  • More graphic scenes. This isn´t, by any means, a necessity but for a mafia romance I would have appreciated more mafia brutality.

All in all I can´t really complain, though. `The Kiss Thief` is a mafia romance that has lots of angst, a decent amount of sex, and drama.

Would I reread this book? Sure. Why not? The parts I loved are definitely worth a reread.

Would I recommend this book? I would. `The Kiss Thief` is well written and the story is full of surprises.

The Cover – 5 Stars:   Hands down- I´m a fan.

The Story – 4  Stars:   Not too shabby. It´s ruthless, unforgiving and also romantic.

The Characters – 4 Stars:  While I did love Wolfe´s ruthless side and Francesca´s strength I missed a little of Angelo and would have liked to have seen some more engagement from the sub characters.

My emotional state after finishing this read:  Happy.
