Popular Romance Authors I Don´t Read Anymore

What once was is no longer…

Do you have an author you´re devoted to? That one special writer who touches your emotions with their words? I have one. Actually, I have a few go-to authors. Unfortunately, I also have a list of writers who I don´t reach out for anymore.

A huge shout out goes to Jess @Fiction No Chaser for inspiring me with her post Am I Growing Out Of YA?

May it be due to the simple fact that I´ve grown out of an author´s style or because an author´s style has changed… I don´t consider myself a dedicated fan anymore.

But before I continue I´d like to leave a little informative note.

KR Product

Here is a list of popular authors who I don´t read anymore.

Colleen Hoover

CoHo banner

Hands down, I was THE fan. I gave the word dedication a new definition when it came to CoHo´s books. Since then the author has celebrated great success with her emotionally-charged books. I was able to follow the author as a faithful fan until 2018 when `All Your Perfects` ( check out my review here ) was published.

The Problem:  I think it´s safe to say that the author´s books and I  aren´t meant for each other anymore. For me, things started going downhill after I read `Confess `. I tried pushing myself to read every new release ( because- dedicated fan here and all ) but I wasn´t able to see the same beauty others saw. With every book, I became more disappointed. I started weighing my options: Should I read another CoHo book? Should I give another one a try? That´s when I pulled the breaks. I went from superfan to try to be a super fan then ended up being a supportive fan. Now I´ve called it quits and just admire the author´s older works.  It´s time for me to move on.

Tarryn Fischer

TF banner

Tarryn Fisher is known for pushing emotional limits with her books and I´ve adored the author for exactly that. The author´s a master of her craft.  `The Opportunist` was what captivated me back in 2013. A raw story that kind of haunted me for days. My last Tarryn Fisher read was `Atheists Who Kneel And Pray `.

The Problem:  I developed a dislike towards the writing style. Every book published between the books I´ve mentioned was more a miss than a hit for me. I felt a strong attitude in the writing I didn´t enjoy. The rawness was taken to new dimensions. I wouldn´t necessarily say I´ve grown out of Tarryn Fisher´s books but I´ve definitely moved on and don´t feel an urge to drop everything to read the latest release anymore.

J. Sterling

j sterling bannerJ. Sterling used to be an author I occasionally checked in on. I´ve read the majority of the author´s books. I remember having received an ARC of one of her books ( can´t recall for which book, though. It´s been sooo long ). I was an on and off reader for a few years until my interest in the author´s books stopped.

The Problem:  My tastes changed. J. Sterling is a wonderful author and her stories are lovely but for me, they aren´t exactly what I´m looking for anymore. Although- I will say that I haven´t written the author completely off. If someone recommends a J. Sterling novel to me and it sounds interesting, I will check it out.

Christina Lauren

christina lauren banner

Ooooh, I was a fan of Christina Lauren. I´m actually still a fan even if I don´t reach out to the author´s books anymore. My first Christina Lauren book was `Beautiful Bastard`. Gosh, I remember when I first saw the cover and thought it was the next best thing since Mark Wahlberg in the Calvin Klein ad. The writing was refreshing and sharp. Exactly what I was looking for at the time.

The Problem: Too many books were released within a short period of time. Now, I´m normally not one to complain about these things because I´m usually the person who´ll bitch about not being able to read the next release right away. But with Christina Lauren´s books, I just wasn´t able to keep up- Not with reading other books from other authors in between. Before I knew it I had lost focus on the whole beautiful series and then ended up hissing my white flag.

Jodi Ellen Malpas

JEM bannerJodi Ellen Malpas was an author who could do me no wrong. Whatever that woman wrote- I inhaled it. First J.E.M. read: ` This Man  `. I´ve abused the `This Man Trilogy` and the `One Night` books to a point where the pages started giving away. If there ever was a go-to author then J. E. M. was it for me.

The Problem: My inner fangirl aged ( sounds so much better than admitting that I´ve aged ) I still love the books I have but I can´t muster up enough excitement for the authors’ other works.

Such big names in a little ol´ post. I´d like to add that I have nothing against any of the authors mentioned in this post. Remember- This is about their products, not about the people behind those products. All the mentioned authors are probably wonderful human beings with hearts of gold.

On a kind note: Colleen Hoover and Tarryn Fisher aren´t exclusively romance writers. Since they´ve written romance novels I´ve read I have included their names. Also: I did NOT read all the books in the featured images, only the majority and some I haven´t displayed.

Let´s chat: Who are your go-to authors? Do you have authors you don´t reach out for anymore? Feel free to drop some names in the comments below. ❤

Thank you for reading this post. I fully appreciate it.

I wish you all a wonderful day,

Many hugs,

Book Review: All Your Perfects – Colleen Hoover

synopsis single

Quinn and Graham’s perfect love is threatened by their imperfect marriage. The memories, mistakes, and secrets that they have built up over the years are now tearing them apart. The one thing that could save them might also be the very thing that pushes their marriage beyond the point of repair.

All Your Perfects is a profound novel about a damaged couple whose potential future hinges on promises made in the past. This is a heartbreaking page-turner that asks: Can a resounding love with a perfect beginning survive a lifetime between two imperfect people?

My Thoughts 2

Here´s my apocalyptic thought process when I first saw `All Your Perfects` by contemporary romance guru author Colleen Hoover.

At first I was skeptical. After seeing the book cover up close I was even more skeptical. Reading the synopsis didn´t do much for my wariness, either. It all looked and sounded too good to be true.

The problem is- I´m a huge fan of Colleen Hoover´s first published books. I mean, I´m still, after all these years, recommending Hopeless and Slammed every time I get a chance to, because those stories are simply great.

Since then Colleen Hoover has published a decent amount of stories ( quite a few I didn´t care much for ) and now the CoHo universe is gifted with another novel.

And here I was, hoping for the old CoHo flame to defrost the ice-cold CoHo fan in me.

I think, in my case, that´s not going to happen and that I should stop waiting for a CoHo miracle to happen.

`All Your Perfects`, a standalone novel with so much drama to last me 2 lifetimes. I´m for drama, but not the type delivered in this read. All your perfects

The topic choice wasn´t what I had expected ( which isn´t terrible. I like novel surprises ) but I welcomed it anyway. A married couple ruined beyond repair due to infertility. I want to applaud the author for being brave enough to touch on the delicate subject. But then the author added more drama to an already dramatic issue. Then added more. And more. By the time I finished reading I wanted to open a bottle of wine because I was overwhelmed from so much drama.

Give a reader and a book character a flippin´ break in between and all is good. Don´t give a reader time to breathe and they´ll end up opening a bottle of wine…. like me.

Sadly, the drama wasn´t what forced me to give this book 2 stars.

I truly believe this would have been a slightly better read if the story didn´t have those dreaded time leaps. Present – past. Past – present. Drove me nuts.

I fully understand the importance of adding background information to a story. I just don´t like it in form of time leaps. Why not just write a duet if there are so many mandatory details? Why not just leave out some drama and stick with one time frame? Why does everything always have to be exaggerated?

And then the end….. Not exactly what I would call a nice and smooth finale for such an exaggerated read. It was nicely rushed.

Before we end this review I´d like to touch on the pricing subject.

The Kindle version almost costs as much as the paperback. A little expensive and also a too big of a risk for my wallet.

Would I recommend this book? No. I really can´t think of anyone I know who´d enjoy this type of story.

Would I reread this book? No.

The Cover – 3 Stars :  It´s okay.

The Story – 2 Stars : I appreciated the main theme of the story. I didn´t appreciate how the story turned out.

The Characters – 2 Stars : Hands down- The most dramatic and broken couple existing.

My emotional state after finishing this read – Disappointed.. again. And because of that this book will be my last Colleen Hoover read.

2 stars

A Tale Of Too Many Bookworm Boxes

I´m a huge Colleen Hoover fan. Maybe not THE greatest, most passionate fan in the entire world but I do love the authors books. I´ve been a fan for years and never missed out on anything the author has published.

It was late 2016 when I first noticed The Bookworm Box. A few people I knew were posting pictures of cute little purple boxes filled with all sorts of book related goodies and 2 random signed paperbacks, and that got me curious. I decided to get in touch with a few people and ask what all the fuss was about.

„It´s SO cool!“ One friend said.

„I love the Bookworm Box. And the proceeds for each box go to charity!“ Another friend said.

Now, that got me interested.

So, not only was a person going to receive 2 signed paperback books with lots of swag, the money spent for a box goes to charity? COOL! I loved the idea but still needed more info before purchasing a box.

To make a long story short – I checked the Bookworm Box homepage out. I went through every category like a crackwhore just to see what the catch was, because…. the Bookworm Box sounded too good to be true. I studied the whole website. Turned it inside and out.

How does it work?

Well, it´s really simple. For a certain amount of money you receive a monthly box subscription that includes 2 signed books and swag ( bookmarks, magnets, postcards…. anything that is book related ). The fee you pay per box goes to a chosen charity. 100% of the profit after overhead costs will be donated to different charities each month.

Easy, right?

But there is a catch. A minor one. The signed books you pay for are a surprise. You have no power over which book you´ll receive when you purchase a Bookworm box. I never thought of that as a problem because I did have faith that the owner of the Bookworm Box, author Colleen Hoover, wouldn´t send out just any type of book, right?

Needless to say- I found nothing fishy or dubious about the Bookworm Box. I was getting signed copies, plus I was discovering new authors… AND at the same time, I was giving to charity. BOOM! A win / win situation.

Now,  Bookworm boxes for us folks across the pond are a little more expensive. In the end, I paid around 50-60 Euros for my first Bookworm Box. That´s not really a great deal, considering the fact that I can get roughly 4-6 books from that kind of money. But hey….. We´re talking about the Bookworm Box, here. Good deeds. Great reads!

I dove head first into the system with blind trust, fully aware that I was paying alot of money for a cute purple box filled with book goodies.

bookworm2

The first order went smooth. It took exactly 1 month for my box to arrive and when it did, I was one happy camper. Mine! ALL MINE!

And because I was satisfied I continued my subscription for the following month.

Although I was in love with the Bookworm Box I had to skip a few boxes because not even I can afford to pay 50-60 Euros every month for 2 signed paperback books.

Everything went well and I stayed a happy fan until one day a box I skipped arrived.

Hmm. Okay. Fine. Maybe there was a misunderstanding on my part. Maybe I accidentally clicked the wrong button and didn´t really skip a box. Stuff like that can happen although I´m usually super careful with online stuff ( you can NEVER be to careful, am I right?). I waved the situation off and accepted the box, knowing I was going to be billed for the box I received. That same day I logged into my Bookworm Box account and checked if I actually skipped the box and I did. So why did the mailman deliver one? Who knows. Again, I clicked the skip button because…. I was sort of broke and couldn´t afford the following box.

A month later….

The mailman delivered 3 Bookworm Boxes. 3 (!!!) pretty purple book goodie packages on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. My first thought was:

  • The people over in Texas must find me special enough to sent me 3 Bookworm boxes
  • I won 3 boxes
  • Someone messed up
  • The internet was broken

One thing was for sure- I skipped that months box. There was no way I ordered those three. In the websites FAQs it´s stated that if you order more than one box then they cannot guarantee different books in those boxes. Meaning- you can get doubles and triple copies. Knowing that, why would I go out of my way and order more than 1 box if there´s a chance that I´ll receive more than 1 copy of the same book? Plus pay for that willingly? Speaking of paying…. I was billed for 3 boxes. Boxes I didn´t ask for because I hit the `skip` button.

I´m a stay at home mother. That means I have no income because I don´t work. I have 2 kids, a husband and we all live in a house that is under construction work since God know´s when. I´m not someone who complains much because life is what it is- not always easy. We´re not wealthy enough to throw money out the window but we´re not close to being poor, either. I can manage treating myself once in a while without living off of toast and butter for 2 weeks until pay-day.

I cannot buy 3 Bookworm boxes and sleep well at night. 3 boxes would be around 165 Euros for me. Can you imagine what my face looked like when the mailman delivered those packages? I was in tears because I was billed. That´s when I contacted the Bookworm Box. They needed to know that something wasn´t right. Customer service is a treat. The woman I exchanged emails with was a lovely, considerate person and after our brief exchange I was convinced that the problem was solved. I mean- we´re all only human, right? Mistakes can be made. But I was still billed.

A month later…..

3 (!!!) more boxes. I was in tears and ready to set my laptop on fire. That day my husband came home and we had a huge argument over my supposedly Bookworm Box addiction. In hindsight, I can´t blame him for his reaction. He saw 6 books, double, triple copies and thought I had lost it completely. To be honest- I thought I had lost it because I thought the problem had been taken care of. I was billed again.

I contacted the nice folks at the Bookworm Box once again and I was told that I had 3 accounts with each a subscription. I knew that wasn´t possible. I remembered signing in once. Because once is enough. After a long exchange I was promised the boxes wouldn´t be billed and that the 3 accounts would be deleted right away. I even got an apology, but that wasn´t any help because..I was billed anyways.

A few days later… 1 single box arrived. More tears were shed. I fired up my laptop and wrote another email, explaining that I got another box despite the fact that my account (s) has been deleted. I was freaking out. Why? Because by that time my credit card company froze my credit card because I reached my credit limit. One look at my online credit info had me in more tears. There I saw many many Bookworm boxes.

„Pay it forward.“ Was what the nice lady said. That´s a tough act for me to pull off because I live in Europe. No one from my inner / outer circle reads english novels. And doing a giveaway would involve more money from my side. Shipping costs can be a bitch. There was no way to pass the multiple books to someone else without having to pay.

You´re probably wondering about refunds, right?

Well, I was promised a refund for the boxes I received at the time but haven´t really gotten a refund.

That is scary stuff because I´ve never in my entire life reached my credit limit. I´ve never spent so much money on books before. Knowing you´re being billed is one thing. But seeing it with your own eyes will take you to a whole other level of “What the fuck am I going to do!”

In the end, I paid a stupidly, outrageous amount of money for books and swag. Money I don´t have and would never spend on surprise boxes, not even for the cute purple Bookworm boxes. Not even if it´s for a good cause. That´s a month worth of groceries for a 4 p. household. I could also get a complete outfits for my girls including gifts for each.

My point is- the money I unwillingly spent could have been used more productively. Not even the fact that my money went to charity can make me feel better because… Right now? With my bill? I don´t give a hoot about chartity.

Bottom line:

The Bookworm Box isn´t evil. The people at the Bookworm Box aren´t evil. But I do believe their system needs a little over looking and a good polish. Situations like mine shouldn´t happen.

Despite me being temporarily in a financial mess I still am a fan of the author and the Bookworm Box. I think it´s a great idea and will continue to support their cause, if only silently. I´m just going to stay far far away from them, from now on. I´ll admire all the good these people do from afar and hope to God I never receive another package again.

I want to end this on a good note without destroying anyone. I have no wish to purposely ruin anyone´s reputation, either. I just wanted to share my experience with The Bookworm Box, even if it wasn´t as great as I had hoped it would be.

All the best to the people at The Bookworm Box.

My Thoughts

Colleen Hoover. I´ve been a huge fan of hers since 2012 and have read everything that woman has ever published. From `Hopeless` ( which had me balling my eyes out like I´ve never done before in my life ) to her recent book `It Ends With Us` ( insert a million hearts ).. I´ve read them all. She´s been like the storytelling Goddess of romance for me. Her stories are a mixture of light and heavy, sending her readers ( in this case, me) on devastating, emotional rides that stick for a long time ( I have yet to recover from `Slammed`. That story drained the life out of me and had me in a funk for days.)

I read `Too Late` on Wattpad before it was taken down for publication purpose.

The warning above is justifiable. Even if this is a CoHo story it´s definitely different from the authors other works. Definitely written for a more mature audience.

`Too Late` was cool. It was dark, unforgiving, captivating, exciting, shocking and filled with tension. I love me some CoHo reads but this one is off the charts brilliant. Totally my kind of read!

2 undercover cops, 1 schizophrenic-obsessive-drug dealer boyfriend and a girl in between. WHAT A STORY and it´s told in true Colleen Hoover style!

I loved it.

I loved that the story had a 21 Jump Street vibe, I loved the twist of events that occured, I loved the heavy emotions, and above all…. I loved how the author was able to turn a normal thing like holding hands into something totally passionate ( The holding hands under the table was AWESOME) Oh. My. Lord. My heart was fluttering like crazy during that scene.

( Note: I´ve been trying to get my husband to recreate that scene with me but he´s doing it ALL WRONG! * sob *)

The end actually ended with a big ass BAM! Although it was a bit different from what I´m used to from the author I still loved it. Go big, or go home, right? Colleen Hoover left with a damn BAM!

`Too Late` is a mandatory read for any Colleen Hoover fan. For anyone who isn´t familiar with the authors work I´d advise you to start reading her stories because they´re definitely an experience no romance reader should miss out on. It´s romantic, it´s twisted, it´s kind and unmerciful, it´s powerful.

The Cover – 5 stars ( It fits with the story and THANKFULLY doesn´t give anything away. )

The Story – 5 stars ( Sheesh, gonna take a while to get that one out of my system)

The Characters – 5 stars ( I loved them all but felt the strongest towards Asa. He was, by far, the most twisted mofo I´ve ever came across in a book)

MY emotional state after finishing this read Recovery is going to be a mean bitch. Lol

I´m giving `Too Late` by Colleen Hoover 5 out of 5 stars

My Bookworm Box Arrived!

I´m going to mark my calendar today because, at last, I got my very first Bookworm Box. Oh, yes. After 29 long days of harrassing the mailman he finally showed up with a purple package full of book stuff just for me!

This is my first go with The Bookworm Box. To be honest- I´ve been wanting to subscribe and get a box for almost a year now but I constantly forgot it ( I swear, if my head wasn´t screwed on…. )

Anyways- It arrived today and the first thing I had to do was hide the package.

You see, I have 2 girls ( 5 yrs and 9 yrs) and color matters for my girls. It plays such an important roll in their lives. Anything purple, pink or neon is accepted. They´re also master thieves and can be vicious little witches when it comes to mommy´s stuff. Opening a purple box infront of them would cause a small war.

bookworm1

For 6 painful hours I waited for them to go to bed so I could open “the purple box” a.k.a “Mommy´s Box”.

It felt like Christmas and my birthday when I lifted the lid. WOOT WOOT! And I had the time of my life combing through all the goodies inside ( alone, not wanting my husband to witness my awrkward book celebration moment. Video of that moment can be seen here)

bookworm2

The package was filled with:

  • swag ( from authors: Marcia Boudreaux, Golden Czermak, Angela Corbett, Erin Noelle, Ophelia London, Lindsay Emory, Alexandra Haughton, Gabbie S. Duran, Kim Carmichael, Jodie Larson, Sabrina York)
  • swag from The Bookworm Box ( keychain, bracelet, and a pen)
  • 2 signed paperback copies ( Ready to Fall by Daisy Prescott, Unwritten by Chelsea M. Cameron)

Seriously- I´m a happy camper! I always welcome swag in any form and having signed paperbacks is like winning the Jackpot for me.

All in all- not a bad deal for $ 39.99. The Bookworm Box is about spreading the good, so 100% of the profit after overhead costs are donated to different charities each month.Which is in my opinion a good thing. It´s actually a win / win / win  situation. Authors are happy about the word being spread, readers receive great swag + signed copies plus charity is involved. Awesome stuff, if you ask me.

I can fully recommend purchasing a package from The Bookworm Box
