Book Review: The Kiss Quotient – Helen Hoang

synopsis single

A heartwarming and refreshing debut novel that proves one thing: there’s not enough data in the world to predict what will make your heart tick.

Stella Lane thinks math is the only thing that unites the universe. She comes up with algorithms to predict customer purchases — a job that has given her more money than she knows what to do with, and way less experience in the dating department than the average thirty-year-old.

It doesn’t help that Stella has Asperger’s and French kissing reminds her of a shark getting its teeth cleaned by pilot fish. Her conclusion: she needs lots of practice — with a professional. Which is why she hires escort Michael Phan. The Vietnamese and Swedish stunner can’t afford to turn down Stella’s offer and agrees to help her check off all the boxes on her lesson plan — from foreplay to more-than-missionary position…

Before long, Stella not only learns to appreciate his kisses but to crave all the other things he’s making her feel. Soon, their no-nonsense partnership starts making a strange kind of sense. And the pattern that emerges will convince Stella that love is the best kind of logic…

My Thoughts 2

You know, sometimes a book hits you hard and sometimes a book doesn´t. In my case, the book did nothing for me.

I can´t begin to tell you how often `The Kiss Quotient` ( The Kiss Quotient #1 ) by author Helen Hoang was recommended to me. Close friends said the book is a must-read. Fellow bloggers urged me to give this chic – lit a chance. “The Kiss Quotient is different,” they said. “You can´t compare it to other chic -lits.”TKQ

Yeah, well… The only thing I realized was how little my friends know about my reading tastes. I also have a strange suspicion that my blog buddies accidentally recommended the wrong book.

`The Kiss Quotient` is not any different from other chic – lits. And I can compare this to other books from the genre. There are often differences in the romance genre but hardly any in the chic – lit department.

To make a long story short: I wasn´t impressed. Not by what was said about the supposedly unique romance between the main characters nor by the story itself. This doesn´t mean I didn´t like the story. This just means that didn´t meet my romance novel standards.

  • The writing is decent but also too dry for my taste.
  • The characters were strong and flawed, which I totally appreciate. I don´t know why, but the main characters reminded me a little of Amy Farrah Fowler and Sheldon Cooper´s brother, Georgie ( characters from The Big Bang Theory ).
  • The story was enjoyable but nothing special
  • Sex overload. I´m not one to turn away from sex scenes but a girl needs a few breather breaks
  • There´s definitely a romance but it´s an insta-love.

I need passion, action, lust, and tension when reading a romance novel. I need a slow TKQ2burn and a potential threat. I need a palette of emotions. Basically- I need an excuse to open a bottle of wine either during or after reading. Unfortunately, this book wasn´t able to move me on an emotional level nor was it powerful enough to get me moving towards the wine cabinet.

Would I recommend this book? I would. Despite my `meh` attitude, I can definitely see why others would fall head over heels for this quirky romance. It´s a decent read but not what I was looking for. I think I can also add that I won´t be continuing the series.

Would I reread this book? Probably not.

The Cover: 3 Stars  –  I have the paperback copy with the rose petals shaped in a heart form. Personally, I believe the cover image is outdated but the color theme is spot on.

The Story:  3 Stars  –  Not bad at all. Just too clichéd and dry.

The Characters:  3 Stars  – Again, not terrible but also not the greatest.

My emotional state after finishing this read – Indifferent.

3 stars

Review- Dirty Dix (#1 Hard Love Romance) by Monica James

Book Description

I knew she was bad news when she walked into my office, but I just couldn’t help myself…

Filthy, sexy and full of surprises, Juliet is so hot she has me on fire. I’ve met my match and I can’t help going back for more.

Then there’s Madison… she’s sweet, funny and awakens in me a fierce need to protect her.

But I don’t do relationships. I don’t usually do the same woman twice.

Juliet and Madison: Two very different women have got me completely hooked.

Who will I choose?

I know who I should choose, but I never said I was the hero of this story, or even the good guy. And besides, who wants to be good, when it feels so good being bad?

My tale isn’t for the faint-hearted. If you’re game, strap yourself in and expect the unexpected. But don’t say I didn’t warn you…

My Thoughts

Monica James is my GO – TO author. This woman has her writing down to a T. It all started out when I read her very first novel `I Surrender` a few years back. Now, many published books later, I´m sitting here and feeling as happy as any reader could feel.

What can I say about this book?

`Dirty Dix` ( Book #1 in the Hard Love Romance ) is a fun, exciting and intriguing read that´ll put you on a ride you´ll never forget. In fact, this story is so addictive it makes it´s readers long for more.Dirty dix

The story is brilliant. Easy going and playful at first and then everything slowly becomes complicated.

New Yorks top psychiatrist, Dr. Dix Mathews, drowns in two women who are both toxic to his own health.

Both women couldn´t be more opposite from one another and Dr. Dix finds himself in a position he shouldn´t have been in the first place.

What to do, what to do? Dr. Dix is screwed one way or another. Or is he?

This book  reminds me of a time when I dated 2 guys at the same time. I was 16 back then and everything went well before both were standing in my mom´s livingroom. The one guy had a bouquet in his hands and the other wore a confused look on his face. I decided to bail. Crawl my way out of the house through my bedroom window and make an epic escape. But I got caught by my mom outside ( I was a terrible teenager).

I wish Dix had a window to make a grande escape but he wasn´t so fortunate ( neither was I, to be honest. I had to deal with both and ended up alone until I dated my husband 3 years later. What a miserable time!).

ANYWAYS…. Dix.

I loved Dix. His character was something special. A doc who helped others for a living got caught up in his own little personal hell. What´s not to love? Reading his parts brought so much satisfaction. The poor bastard struggled. He was a professional with a broken heart who ignored the rules. And with every step that beautiful man took he unintentionally dug his own grave deeper and deeper. He was fighting an emotional war with his desires, his own personal addiction.

Dix and Juliet were a match made in sex heaven. Dix and Madison were a match made in relationship heaven.

Who will he pick? Both? Neither? Will anyone find some sort of happiness in this book? You´ll have to find that one out for yourself.

All I can tell you is that this story was so good I couldn´t put it down. And the cliffhanger ending… I saw it coming. I truly did. I just hoped it wouldn´t happen. But it did and now I´m left with the awkward feeling of not knowing what´ll happen next until I can get my greedy claws on book #2, `Wicked Dix`.

An enticing, sexy and hot read!

The Cover – 4 stars ( I´m not such a fan of a buffed torso on a book cover but I am a fan of a white shirt and black tie. There´s something sexy about that. And the colors are great.)

The Story – 5 stars ( Way cool. Brings back so many ugly but now funny memories.)

The Characters – 5 stars ( Dix, Madison, Juliet, Finch and Hunter… What a great lot!)

My emotional state after finishing this read – Excited. I just can´t wait to find out what happens next!

I´m giving `Dirty Dix` ( Book #1 Hard Love Romance) by Monica James 5 out of 5 stars.

Always With Love ( Billy & Me )- Giovanna Fletcher

Book Description

The next much-anticipated romantic chapter in Billy and Sophie’s love story from bestselling author Giovanna Fletcher.

Sophie’s got used to being the girlfriend of Billy Buskin, the biggest movie star in the world. Sort of.

But when she and Billy take a trip to visit his family in Los Angeles, she quickly discovers she’s totally unprepared for the chaos of Hollywood, the paparazzi and Billy’s controlling mother.

And when Billy extends his stay in LA, leaving Sophie to fly home to Rosefont Hill alone, it seems there’s more than just miles between them.

Now Sophie must decide if they can overcome their differences for good. Because not every love story lasts the distance . . .

My Thoughts

After I finished `Billy & Me` ( Book #1 ) I couldn´t wait to get my hands on the second book, `Always With Love` by Giovanna Fletcher.

To make a long story short- `Always With Love` was a slight disappointment.

Don´t get me wrong- The story itself was okay. It felt cozy, it felt familiar. All was well until I was halfways through the story and it suddenly dawned on me that I was reading the exact same story as the first just with a few minor additions and a change of location.

The issues Sophie and Billy dealt with from book 1 were nearly the exact same in `Always With Love`, only this time they took place in the L.A. Instead of London. Such a pity, really. And the „bad guy“ wasn´t Billy´s manager this time- it was his mother.

There was also no character development regarding Sophia or Billy. She held onto her insecurities like a lifeline which was a little aggravating. Sophie was very much ungreatful and annoying and that doesn´t really make her a good Heroine or makes me feel like I can relate to her. It makes her get on my nerves. Billy´s character seemed to regress. He was alot of times childish or he was just plain bla. For a superstar like himself I expected a little more of everything.

Also- didn´t the Hero and Heroine make up in the last book? Surely both should have learned from their mistakes instead of repeating them. They somehow managed to run around in circles. Their relationship literally screamed „Split up!“.

And then there was the super speed ending. You won´t ever hear me complain about a happy-ever-after but this one came out of the blue. It was like the author ran out of ideas.

In my opinion- not a bad read but also not the best. And if I´m even more honest, I´d say the author could have saved herself alot of time by not writing a continuation of Billy & Me.

The Cover – 3 stars ( It´s better than the first book but still not my cup of tea )

The Story – 2 stars ( Nothing new. No build-up. Abrupt ending.)

The Characters – 1 star ( Instead of growing, both took a few steps back.)

My emotional state after finishing this story – Disappointed.

I´m giving `Always With Love` ( Billy & Me #2 ) by Giovanna Fletcher 2 out of 5 stars

Billy and Me ( Billy and Me #1) – Giovanna Fletcher

Book Description

In this utterly sweet and moving women’s fiction novel, a celebrity comes to town and sweeps a young woman – who is used to being overlooked – off her feet.

Sophie May is content with her life in her small English village, working in the local coffee shop and living with her mom. But when famous actor Billy comes to town to play Mr. Darcy in a new film adaptation of Pride and Prejudice, Sophie’s quiet life is quickly turned on its head. Billy is adored by women around the world, but he only wants Sophie on his arm. But being with Billy comes at a price, and Sophie is thrown in the spotlight after years of shying away from attention. Can she handle the constant scrutiny that comes with being with Billy?

Brimming with humor, wit, and genuine warmth, Billy and Me is a book about taking a chance on life and on love.

My Thoughts

Well, butter my butt and call me biscuit! What an extremely cute read. My God- I had so much fun with `Billy and Me` and if it weren´t for my near death experience on my vacation ( yes, I get very dramatic when my Kindle dies on me while I´m out of the country ) I would never have marched into a bookstore and bought `Billy and Me`.

Yes. This was a panic purchase and I didn´t regret it. My husband gave me exactly 5 minutes to find a book so I jumped in the store, grabbed the first thing that looked romantic, paid for it and left.

To make a long story short- I wasn´t the best kind of company that day because the story was much more interesting than taking a hike through windy mountains.

A simple lovestory with strong emotions.

What I loved most about `Billy and Me` was how it wasn´t pushy. It wasn´t really relateable ( or, who knows- these things probably could happen ) but still highly enjoyable.

How would you react when a movie star bumps into you at work? Well, in `Billy and Me` Sophie May didn´t react the way she should have. She was absolutely clueless on who the good looking guy was.

From that point on Sophie and movie star Billy became an item. Their relationship was innocent until Billy had to go back to London and Sophie decided to tag along. There was trouble in paradise and Sophie was suffering under the movie star life of Billy. Hollywood is ruthless, but being around Billy´s entourage was even more unforgiving.

Was their relationship doomed? Would Sophie crush under the preasure of being in the spotlight?

Questions after questions after questions……

The characters were just fabulous. Sophie didn´t have an easy childhood but she had a complete village of supporters who loved her. Due to family matters Sophie never left the small town and practically missed out on quite a few life events she should have experienced.

Billy was the outgoing type with the perfect looks and a great personality. On top of that he was a movie star and endlessly in love with Sophie- the „girl who baked“.

They fit perfectly together until- they didn´t anymore.

There were emotional up´s and down´s, even a Pretty Woman moment that had me squealing with joy!

A beautiful, catchy and cute romance that had me glued to every single page!

The cover – 4 stars ( Okay. The cover is pretty, but also a little busy. Didn´t know what to look at at first.)

The Characters – 5 stars ( From the main to the subcharacters- all beyond loveable.)

The Story- 4 stars ( Not really anything new but the story was told in a cute way.)

My emotional state after finishing this read – Relieved, happy, but also afraid knowing there´s a second book about these two and I can´t handle another meltdown like I had while reading `Billy and Me`.

I´m giving `Billy and Me`by author Giovanna Fletcher 4 out of 5 romantic stars!
