Switching Book Genres

Reading slumps- You can´t avoid them no matter how hard you try. And trust me- I´ve tried.

But you can prevent them from happening too often. I´ve gone through all the household tricks to overcome a reading funk but none have helped me as much as a genre swap.

The good old mixing genres trick.

I don´t know about you but I´m that person who will get annoyed really quick when reading too much of the same. Thoughts like  “Uugh, not this again.”  or the occasional  “For fuck’s sake” will slip out of my mouth, along with loud groans and even louder sighs when I get to the stage of having read too many romances.

It gets a little one-sided when I stick to one genre.

As much as I love my romances I do tend to find them boring as hell sometimes. Yes. I said it. You read that correctly. I get bored with romance. I can´t, for all that´s pink and fluffy, stand to read 10 from-friends-to-lovers / from-enemies-to-lovers romances back to back. The same would be impossible with thrillers or historical fiction.

I bet you´re thinking  “Why doesn´t she just read a different romance?“. Good question. Not easy to answer, though.

You see, as it is with any other genre, there are sub-genres. Romance is just an umbrella term that covers all bases. I don´t consider sub-genre changes to be helpful because no matter the sub-genre- A romance basically stays a romance.

YA college romances carry more or less the same theme as a second chance romance do. Erotica novels are literary pornographies but at the end of the day, they´re still romances. It´s all about the drama and fluff. There´s a common goal. The only drastic difference ( for me ) is the writing.

(NOTE: This is just my take on the subject. These are by no means facts.)

So, in order for me to keep myself from slipping into a reading slump and to maintain a healthy level of appreciation for books, I swap book genres.

.

I like to compare reading with having meals. If you constantly eat the same dish night after night you´re bound to develop a certain reluctance towards the dish. As much as I love lasagne I couldn´t eat it every day. As with everything else in life: overindulgence can have a negative effect. I guess you could spice up your lasagne nights by changing ingredients but that won´t change the dish. A lasagne is still a lasagne. There´s no difference for me when it comes to reading.  A romance is still a romance no matter the sub-genre.

For me, it´s all about keeping a healthy balance when it comes to reading. Switch things up a bit by jumping from romance to fantasy or horror then back to romance. This not only prevents reading slumps from happening but also gives a reader the opportunity to get back to their favored genre with a clear head.

” I´ll have a roomie romance today and fairies dancing in a meadow next week.”

This “technique” has helped me loads.

I know book bloggers who don´t have problems with sticking to what they prefer and what they love. They read and review for a specific genre that works for them without giving other genres another thought. These bloggers claim they love one genre and one genre only. I admire that. I think it´s great when readers stick to their guns.

Of course, I could just put a book down and call it a day when I´m in a mood. But where´s the fun in doing that? I figured out that it´s not always a matter of needing a break. A simple genre swap can be just as effective.

What do you do when you´re in a reading slump? How do you get back to reading when you´re in a funk? Tell me your secrets. I´d love to chat. ❤

Thank you so much for taking the time to read this post. I hope this was somewhat helpful and if not, at least enjoyable.
Sending out many bookish hugs,

Have a wonderful day.

Thank The Books It´s Friday

Helloooo * insert sing-song voice*.

Welcome to another magnificent Friday. I hope you all are ready to kick back and relax because… you all deserve it.

I decided that this week´s weekend kick-off is going to be a little different. Sit tight, buckle up, my dear book-loving gang… My beloved followers and avid commenters. I´m about to unload a bunch of sap.

At first, I thought about baking you a cake. But then I remembered how apocalyptic my cake baking skills are ( I can screw up a Betty Crocker cake mix because I´m THAT special ). This is why I bought brownies. So, these are for you. A thank you for sticking around for so long and letting me torture you with some of my odd posts.

brownies

Then I thought of other things that could show my appreciation. Things I would randomly give people who are nothing but kind, funny and supportive- Such as the dedicated bunch who follow me and show me through the comments that my posts aren´t for nothing. Thank YOU!

flowers

But what good are brownies when I´m the only one eating them? I can´t share my brownies with you. What good are flowers when you all aren´t able to accept them properly?

It dawned on me that there´s nothing I could give you as a token of my appreciation for what you´ve given me. Which is sad. The internet and its ability to let us all communicate while we´re all scattered across the world is a blessing. But it does have one major downside – We´re all still worlds apart. This makes it harder for me to invite everyone over for a BBQ or meet for drinks. I´d like to return the love I´ve received in some form but… I can´t. Not really. So, you´ll have to do with a simple Thank You.

I know. That´s nothing special, either. But it´s all I have. Just my fat fingers holding up a sign. * sigh *

Thank you from the bottom of my heart ❤ Your comments made me smile. All your likes don´t go unnoticed and they´re much appreciated. ❤

Also…

A huge THANK YOU goes out to all the new Morgana´s Book Box followers. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. If you want to know what this blog is all about I would kindly suggest you click Hello & Welcome instead of visiting the About Me. I haven´t included a read-worthy About Me yet * shamefully hiding face *. Although- I´ll probably update my About Me by the time you all see this, so… You´re welcome to take a look at either. ❤

Puuh. I guess that´s it.

Feel hugged. Feel loved. Know that you’ve made an impact. 💜

My Most Viewed Posts 2018

So, I had an idea. Granted, it´s nothing outrageous but I thought it would be interesting to review my own blog. To see what worked really well and what didn´t, ergo: which posts received the most views in 2018.

I´m not normally interested in numbers and stats. I work with numbers all day so I´m not too keen on checking more out in my spare time.

I will say though that I was a little surprised when I reviewed my own blog the other day. Shocked, even. From all the posts I´ve posted last year the ones I thought weren´t worth it generated the most views. And then I realized that my blog had gone through a phase where reviews were more popular than discission posts and the other way around.

I´m not sure if this has something to do with specific books or authors, or if it has something to do with the right targeting, using the correct keywords, but it was definitely something to think about.

If I´d sit down and take my time to analyse everything ( which I won´t because I don´t have any nerves left ) I might get behind the actual reason as to why certain posts gained a nice amount of views and why others haven´t.

So, without further ado here are my most viewed posts in 2018.

The one topic I never thought would get attention was the Faleena Hopkins post. Dear pink fluff, that one sky rocketed and showed me numbers I haven´t seen in years. For some reason, I wasn´t too late for that gossip and thought I´d try to write a post about it. If only I were better at the gossip game….

The next surprise was the What Does A Book Blogger Do post. I never thought anyone would be interested in finding out what it is us common foot folk do. I guess I thought wrong.

And then the Religion In Romance Novels post. This one is very tricky as it didn´t generate lots of views on the day I posted it but it is the post with the highest views in 2018. To be honest- I wasn´t sure in the first place if I was doing myself a favor by posting an article on religion in romance novels. I don´t believe in God and was afraid of the backlash from religious fanatics. In hindsight, I´m glad I took that risk, though.

These posts were extremely fun but so exhausting to create. I bow before all the hotshots who do these posts all the time because I couldn´t. Not even for all the glorious views they´ve generated. I have a few more book cover trends posts I want to upload this year but the rest? I need to be in a good mood to create another 10 funny…. .

Reviews are a universe of their own. Sometimes you generate views with a popular book and sometimes you don´t. Sometimes an older book gets all the spotlight. That´s just the way it is. Many things have to be taken in consideration when it comes to romance reviews.

1) Romance is not the most popular genre ( it´s children´s fiction and fantasy, for those of you who wanted to know ). Statistics show that women´s fiction doesn´t sell as well as YA fiction, historical fiction and mystery / thrillers do. I´m not surprised and can live with this.

2) Views vary with the type of publishing. I´ve had more views for a world wide bestseller than I have had with the majority of my books from self published authors.

3) Timing is everything. From what I´ve noticed, the timing plays a crucial role when it comes to reviews. If I wanted for my blog to achieve something then I should be glued to my laptop screen minutes before release day or for any new reveals. This generates views. Strike while the iron is hot. But since I´m a lousy book release spy I end up reading and reviewing new releases much later and that generates less views ( for me ).

And here I thought people would be on vacation and doing… vacation things instead of reading posts during the summer. I was wrong. November doesn´t surprise me, though.

Not bad considering how much I slacked. That´s roughly a post every other day.

All in all I can´t say 2018 wasn´t successful. And looking at how well some posts did I do think I have a better picture on what type of content works wonders for my blog and which don´t.

Instagram Features From Morgana´s Book Box

With the new year I found some new energy to work Instagram again. Ha! Who would have thought, right? Between the unforgivable algorithm and my lazy self I figured I´d forget all the junk I was fed up about and just start to enjoy Instagram for myself. Partly because everything else would piss me off. * insert huge smile *insta icon free

With that being said…. I´ve been having fun on the pic platform with doing whatever the flipping foo foo I want. To hell with Instagram goals. It´s time for some awkwardness in form of book love.

Ready to see the features? Sure you are * wink *

I normally dislike my kindle. Not because it´s shit. No. I hate it because it´s dead most of the time. I belong to the lazy chicks who don´t charge their kindles.

Don´t ask me why but I just love this cover. Would be awesome to have this image printed in poster size.

Usual gifts I received from my younger brother:

Laced table cloths ( don´t ask ), colored pictures of dragons ( the pictures turned into wolves as he got older ), a selfie of himself in a picture frame ( because he once felt left out ), A CD with the music he likes ( because apparently, I have no taste in music )… It took the boy 20+ years to come up with the perfect Christmas gift. ❤

Just slap the book on the Lazy Susan, add some confetti, throw 10 filters over your pic and POOF!

Ditch the Lazy Susan but add new filters. * face palm * I´m surprised I found the energy to get up from the sofa the day I took this shot. 2019 is supposed to be a lazy year.

So that´s it. A little bit of 2018 and a little bit of 2019 and you can already tell where my bright Insta future is headed. Be prepared for sofa pics very soon!

Also, not to forget- If you´re on Instagram be sure to hit me up and give me a nudge to follow you back.

Hello & Welcome

Dear new Followers,

Hello & Welcome to Morgana´s Book Blog!

I thought of quite a few ways on how to show my appreciation for all the follows in the last few days but I wasn´t able to come up with anything overly genius or boujee enough that would show my gratitude. I guess you´ll have to settle with a simple yet meaningful

THANK YOU

Thank you all for the kind support you´ve shown after Beth´s @Books Nest  post on her Twitter. ❤ And THANK YOU, Beth, for taking the time out of your day to share some book blogger love.

Sadly, it would take me ages to thank each and every one who has followed me this week. If you happen to belong to the Twitter bunch then I hope you feel the thanks. If you don´t belong to the Twitter gang then I hope you feel the same appreciation.

I think it would be a good opportunity to introduce myself. I mean- You really have no clue who you´re dealing with so it only makes sense to give a quick run down on what you all have gotten yourselves into. *gg*

Sure, you can read my About Me… But that´s boring ( going to have to update that in the near future…)

Ready? I know I am.

hiMy name is Morgana and I´m…. over 30. No, wait, I´m actually closer to 40 now but who cares about that, right? You´re only as old as you feel. 80% of the day I feel like 130 years old. The other 20%  of my emotional household is still stuck in my mid 20´s.

If you´re wondering about the name… Don´t worry. You´re not the only ones. Yes, I was named after the witch from the King Author legend. Dad was a fan of the movie Excalibur and I had to pay the price for his fan girling over Helen Mirren in the 80´s. Pronounce it the way you want because it´s not possible to butcher it even more than it has been. Makes good for a unique blog name, though. 🙂  ( Plus, I´m a fan as well, so…Dad´s forgiven )

I´m an American living in Germany,  a mom of 2 girls, married, I have a degree in Chemistry, my favorite color is blue, I´m short, an extrovert, my hobby is taking naps and drinking hot chocolate…. I love to go out and meet with friends. Favorite genre to read is romance and sometimes fantasy, and I´m a passionate book blogger. To help you paint a better picture of my life I´ve created a small graphic to help better understand.

I basically drink too much hot chocolate, nap whenever I can, think a lot, and read ( whenever the girls aren´t around )

As for the book blogging bit- I´m a semi-experienced blogger turned hobby book blogger. Many many moons ago I decided to go pro in the book business but found it too exhausting and demanding. After a minor burnout, I took a much needed 1-year break away from the blogsphere and ended up coming back with a different plan – One that suited my purpose much better. Here I am now, 9 years later with a clean slate working my blog at my own pace.

Speaking of blogging: Here´s what my book blogging life looks like.

  1. Spying. Because I´m a book ninja looking out for the newest reads, comparing prices, etc.
  2. Getting excited every time I find something during my spy sessions. Most of the time I get excited when I spot a book (s).
  3. Ending up on the sofa with a mug in one hand and a book in the other.

Reading is high on my “How to make Morgana happy” list. Review writing isn´t. I don´t know… I´m not very fond of typing up reviews, especially when it´s a review for a less than 3 star read. I do it anyway, though, because I believe it´s necessary. You can´t have the good without the bad, right? As long as everything is done with respect then all is allowed.

My 3 most popular moods during or after reading:

Disappointed. Confused. In love.

There´s really no other way to explain myself better.

There ya have it. That´s me neatly presented to you with a little over 700 words.

If you decide to follow my book blog regularly then you´ll find that I try to balance the normal read & review out with discussion posts and other fun features / themes. I also try to do at least 3 posts during the week and spend the weekends catching up on the blogs I follow.

Since my private life is filled with work, being a mom & wife and LOTS of reading I hardly have enough energy to hang around other social media much. Juggling Twitter, Instagram and my blog is a challenge sometimes so I´ll often just concentrate on my WordPress instead of hanging all over the place. If you do happen to want to hunt me down on Twitter then feel free to hit me up there!

OKAY, NOW I AM FINISHED.

Thank you again for the follows. I´m looking forward to reading all the future goodies you´ll be sharing on your blogs.

Feel hugged.
