My Most Viewed Posts 2018

So, I had an idea. Granted, it´s nothing outrageous but I thought it would be interesting to review my own blog. To see what worked really well and what didn´t, ergo: which posts received the most views in 2018.

I´m not normally interested in numbers and stats. I work with numbers all day so I´m not too keen on checking more out in my spare time.

I will say though that I was a little surprised when I reviewed my own blog the other day. Shocked, even. From all the posts I´ve posted last year the ones I thought weren´t worth it generated the most views. And then I realized that my blog had gone through a phase where reviews were more popular than discission posts and the other way around.

I´m not sure if this has something to do with specific books or authors, or if it has something to do with the right targeting, using the correct keywords, but it was definitely something to think about.

If I´d sit down and take my time to analyse everything ( which I won´t because I don´t have any nerves left ) I might get behind the actual reason as to why certain posts gained a nice amount of views and why others haven´t.

So, without further ado here are my most viewed posts in 2018.

The one topic I never thought would get attention was the Faleena Hopkins post. Dear pink fluff, that one sky rocketed and showed me numbers I haven´t seen in years. For some reason, I wasn´t too late for that gossip and thought I´d try to write a post about it. If only I were better at the gossip game….

The next surprise was the What Does A Book Blogger Do post. I never thought anyone would be interested in finding out what it is us common foot folk do. I guess I thought wrong.

And then the Religion In Romance Novels post. This one is very tricky as it didn´t generate lots of views on the day I posted it but it is the post with the highest views in 2018. To be honest- I wasn´t sure in the first place if I was doing myself a favor by posting an article on religion in romance novels. I don´t believe in God and was afraid of the backlash from religious fanatics. In hindsight, I´m glad I took that risk, though.

Reviews are a universe of their own. Sometimes you generate views with a popular book and sometimes you don´t. Sometimes an older book gets all the spotlight. That´s just the way it is. Many things have to be taken in consideration when it comes to romance reviews.

1) Romance is not the most popular genre ( it´s children´s fiction and fantasy, for those of you who wanted to know ). Statistics show that women´s fiction doesn´t sell as well as YA fiction, historical fiction and mystery / thrillers do. I´m not surprised and can live with this.

2) Views vary with the type of publishing. I´ve had more views for a world wide bestseller than I have had with the majority of my books from self published authors.

3) Timing is everything. From what I´ve noticed, the timing plays a crucial role when it comes to reviews. If I wanted for my blog to achieve something then I should be glued to my laptop screen minutes before release day or for any new reveals. This generates views. Strike while the iron is hot. But since I´m a lousy book release spy I end up reading and reviewing new releases much later and that generates less views ( for me ).

Instagram Features From Morgana´s Book Box

With the new year I found some new energy to work Instagram again. Ha! Who would have thought, right? Between the unforgivable algorithm and my lazy self I figured I´d forget all the junk I was fed up about and just start to enjoy Instagram for myself. Partly because everything else would piss me off. * insert huge smile *insta icon free

With that being said…. I´ve been having fun on the pic platform with doing whatever the flipping foo foo I want. To hell with Instagram goals. It´s time for some awkwardness in form of book love.

Ready to see the features? Sure you are * wink *

I normally dislike my kindle. Not because it´s shit. No. I hate it because it´s dead most of the time. I belong to the lazy chicks who don´t charge their kindles.

Usual gifts I received from my younger brother:

Laced table cloths ( don´t ask ), colored pictures of dragons ( the pictures turned into wolves as he got older ), a selfie of himself in a picture frame ( because he once felt left out ), A CD with the music he likes ( because apparently, I have no taste in music )… It took the boy 20+ years to come up with the perfect Christmas gift. ❤

Hello & Welcome

Dear new Followers,

Hello & Welcome to Morgana´s Book Blog!

I thought of quite a few ways on how to show my appreciation for all the follows in the last few days but I wasn´t able to come up with anything overly genius or boujee enough that would show my gratitude. I guess you´ll have to settle with a simple yet meaningful

THANK YOU

Thank you all for the kind support you´ve shown after Beth´s @Books Nest  post on her Twitter. ❤ And THANK YOU, Beth, for taking the time out of your day to share some book blogger love.

Sadly, it would take me ages to thank each and every one who has followed me this week. If you happen to belong to the Twitter bunch then I hope you feel the thanks. If you don´t belong to the Twitter gang then I hope you feel the same appreciation.

I think it would be a good opportunity to introduce myself. I mean- You really have no clue who you´re dealing with so it only makes sense to give a quick run down on what you all have gotten yourselves into. *gg*

Sure, you can read my About Me… But that´s boring ( going to have to update that in the near future…)

Ready? I know I am.

hiMy name is Morgana and I´m…. over 30. No, wait, I´m actually closer to 40 now but who cares about that, right? You´re only as old as you feel. 80% of the day I feel like 130 years old. The other 20%  of my emotional household is still stuck in my mid 20´s.

If you´re wondering about the name… Don´t worry. You´re not the only ones. Yes, I was named after the witch from the King Author legend. Dad was a fan of the movie Excalibur and I had to pay the price for his fan girling over Helen Mirren in the 80´s. Pronounce it the way you want because it´s not possible to butcher it even more than it has been. Makes good for a unique blog name, though. 🙂  ( Plus, I´m a fan as well, so…Dad´s forgiven )

I´m an American living in Germany,  a mom of 2 girls, married, I have a degree in Chemistry, my favorite color is blue, I´m short, an extrovert, my hobby is taking naps and drinking hot chocolate…. I love to go out and meet with friends. Favorite genre to read is romance and sometimes fantasy, and I´m a passionate book blogger. To help you paint a better picture of my life I´ve created a small graphic to help better understand.

I basically drink too much hot chocolate, nap whenever I can, think a lot, and read ( whenever the girls aren´t around )

As for the book blogging bit- I´m a semi-experienced blogger turned hobby book blogger. Many many moons ago I decided to go pro in the book business but found it too exhausting and demanding. After a minor burnout, I took a much needed 1-year break away from the blogsphere and ended up coming back with a different plan – One that suited my purpose much better. Here I am now, 9 years later with a clean slate working my blog at my own pace.

Speaking of blogging: Here´s what my book blogging life looks like.

  1. Spying. Because I´m a book ninja looking out for the newest reads, comparing prices, etc.
  2. Getting excited every time I find something during my spy sessions. Most of the time I get excited when I spot a book (s).
  3. Ending up on the sofa with a mug in one hand and a book in the other.

Reading is high on my “How to make Morgana happy” list. Review writing isn´t. I don´t know… I´m not very fond of typing up reviews, especially when it´s a review for a less than 3 star read. I do it anyway, though, because I believe it´s necessary. You can´t have the good without the bad, right? As long as everything is done with respect then all is allowed.

My 3 most popular moods during or after reading:

Disappointed. Confused. In love.

There´s really no other way to explain myself better.

There ya have it. That´s me neatly presented to you with a little over 700 words.

If you decide to follow my book blog regularly then you´ll find that I try to balance the normal read & review out with discussion posts and other fun features / themes. I also try to do at least 3 posts during the week and spend the weekends catching up on the blogs I follow.

Since my private life is filled with work, being a mom & wife and LOTS of reading I hardly have enough energy to hang around other social media much. Juggling Twitter, Instagram and my blog is a challenge sometimes so I´ll often just concentrate on my WordPress instead of hanging all over the place. If you do happen to want to hunt me down on Twitter then feel free to hit me up there!

OKAY, NOW I AM FINISHED.

Thank you again for the follows. I´m looking forward to reading all the future goodies you´ll be sharing on your blogs.

Feel hugged.

10 Most Revealing Book Titles

Hold your knickers in place, folks, because this is going to be a special awkward post on the 10 Most Revealing Book Titles! Because the internet doesn´t have enough of these `Top 10 Most…` posts.

Don´t tell me you didn´t see this coming. Seriously, you just had to know I´d not only want to reduce myself to examining book cover images. Nu-uh, mister / missy. I´m going to take this a step further and tackle book titles, too!

Because there´s a whole book universe filled with crazy, suspicious, revealing book titles out there, especially in the Lit-world.

We´re all good at judging a book by its cover. I say a title deserves just as much judgement.

A book title is important. Just as with the cover image, the title represents a book. The title has to be just as eye-catching as the cover image to grab a reader´s attention. Besides, a book without a title is going to be a bitch to find. Can you image the chaos title – less books would create in our world? I´m not going to even try imagining that because my brain will probably start to hurt after 5 minutes.

Remember the part where I mention how a title represents a book? Yeah, some writers / authors ( whoever the foo foo picks a title ) take this little aspect too far and reveal the who story – Just with a few words. And some…. * bracing myself for this one * just don´t give a hoot or they give too much of a hoot- thinking they´ve gone all creative with their book titles. These people haven´t understood the meaning of `make or break`. In many cases, authors tend to break more than make.

Another thing I´d like to add is: If you have a wild imagination ( like myself ) and find humor in almost everything in life ( even book titles. ESPECIALLY book titles ) then you´ll have a hard time finding a title that´s actually interesting instead of humorous. For example: When I see a book in a bookstore with the title `What If It´s Us`my mind will immediately create a convo that looks something like this: “What if it´s NOT us, huh? What if it´s the other guy with the comb – over in aisle 3? What if I was a giant? Would they let me have all the corn flakes boxes for free?” Do you feel my pain? No?

Still, `What If Its Us`is, despite my weird ways, a great title. It´s catchy. It makes me want to find out more about the book. The title doesn´t spoil the story.

Nevertheless – Book titles are a matter of taste. What I find weird doesn´t mean it IS weird.

Here are my 10 Most Revealing Book Titles! Feel free to chip in the comments below if you agree or disagree with this list of quirky and questionable book titles.

  1. Drive Me Wild – Julie Kriss

I see what ya doin´there. A guy with arms as thick as my thighs, tatts and a little thumb to lip action… add the revealing title and I know without reading the blurb what the book is about. Do I find the title catchy enough? Nope. Ain´t nothing driving me wild here.

drive me wild

2. Good Gone Bad – Giana Darling

I really appreciate not having to buy this book now because I know the story has a character that´s gone from good to bad. And by the looks of the guy´s face in the image… He looks like he´s giving me the “You really sure about getting this book?” look while escaping prison. Is the title catchy? Not for me. Too revealing and not interesting enough for me.

good gone bad

3. Once Upon A Texas Christmas – Katherine Garbera

Of course. A Texas Christmas. Gottcha. I predict Texas and Christmas. My gut tells me I´m not far from the truth. Aside from the fact that I loathe Christmas romance novels I´d say this would never be something I´d want to buy. Is the title catchy? No. It´s too long and something people can easily oversee, unless they´re looking for this particular type of read.

4. Uncockblockable – Shay Savage

Damn! What a title. To tell you the truth, I wouldn´t know what to do with a book with that title. Probably never read it because it has the word cock in it. Look, I have a potty mouth and can be vulgar with the right company… but the word ´cock´doesn´t necessarily belong in a book title. I might be alone with this opinion but hey… it´s a turn off for me. Also, the title is placed in the worst place ever. On a shirt? The author´s name is more prominent than the title. Do I think the title is catchy? Yeah, for the wrong reason.

uncockblockable

5. Possessed By The Vampire – Kellie McAllen

Is this some weird spanky spanky vampire romance? If so, then I´ll pass. Is this perhaps a romanticized bloodsucker tale about a young woman who is mad with lust and a vampire who´s dying to control the young woman´s libido? Is that an Aztec temple in the background?! Do I think the title is catchy? NO! The title is a tad too tacky for my taste.

possessed by the vampire

6. The Bull Rider´s Christmas Baby – Laura Marie Altom

Understood. The baby is due on Christmas. His/her father is a bull rider who I assume is also a cowboy ( the hat is a dead giveaway ). No more details needed now. I can go to bed at night knowing I skipped this potential brilliant read that has Christmas feels, a cowboy / bull rider and a baby in it. Is the title catchy? Absolutely not.

bullriders christmas baby

7. The Hero And The Hacktivist – Pippa Grant

Thank you, dear person who picked the title. It would have been a bitch finding out what the characters do for a living while reading. Who wants to do that anyway? Reading is too much work. The more you reveal on the cover the better. Do I find the title catchy? I find the cover flippin´lazy.

The Hero and The Hacktivist

8. Held Captive By The Cavemen – Shoshanna Evers

Tell us more, dear person who was in charge of the title. Would be a shame to leave out all the other bullet pointers. Do I find this title catchy? Uuhm… I don´t know what to think. I can´t stop all the naughty comebacks in my mind for this title.

held captive

9.   The Loneliest Alpha – T. A. Grey

Oh, this is a bit depressing. The alpha is not just lonely – He´s the loneliest Alpha, probably from all Alphas existing. He ain´t looking so lonely on the cover image, though. Hey, Alpha of all Alphas, explain yourself! You´re sending off some mixed signals here. Do I find the title catchy? Good Laawd, no.

the loneliest alpha

10. Everyone Poops – Taro Gomi

* slamming hands on table * I KNEW IT! Lol. This is by far my favorite weird book title because it´s not only weird, it´s double weird because it´s for children. I don´t know about you but I think the poop topic doesn´t need further explanation because there´s no avoiding the act itself. Why this needs a book is beyond me. What would book #2 look like? `Everyone Poops Different Shapes and Sizes`?

everyone poops

That´s it for now, dear bookish Padawans. Don´t worry, though…There´s more to this category than you could ever imagine. A whole book universe filled with weird book titles. Stay tuned. ❤

But before I leave…

Do you have a favorite book title that reveals too much of everything? Let me know in the comments below. ❤

Book Review: A Curse So Dark And Lonely – Brigid Kemmerer

synopsis single

Fall in love, break the curse.

It once seemed so easy to Prince Rhen, the heir to Emberfall. Cursed by a powerful enchantress to repeat the autumn of his eighteenth year over and over, he knew he could be saved if a girl fell for him. But that was before he learned that at the end of each autumn, he would turn into a vicious beast hell-bent on destruction. That was before he destroyed his castle, his family, and every last shred of hope.

Nothing has ever been easy for Harper Lacy. With her father long gone, her mother dying, and her brother barely holding their family together while constantly underestimating her because of her cerebral palsy, she learned to be tough enough to survive. But when she tries to save someone else on the streets of Washington, DC, she’s instead somehow sucked into Rhen’s cursed world.

Break the curse, save the kingdom.

A prince? A monster? A curse? Harper doesn’t know where she is or what to believe. But as she spends time with Rhen in this enchanted land, she begins to understand what’s at stake. And as Rhen realizes Harper is not just another girl to charm, his hope comes flooding back. But powerful forces are standing against Emberfall . . . and it will take more than a broken curse to save Harper, Rhen, and his people from utter ruin.

My Thoughts 2

I like fairy tale retellings. So much so that I´d drop whatever I´m reading just to dive head first in a pimped fairy tale. What some might not be aware of is that this book is more than just a retelling. It´s more or less a mash up of two popular stories with a pinch of the authors own signature.

Beauty & The Beast meets A Court Of Thorns And Roses

I´m not mad about the mash up, though. I thought `A Curse So Dark And Lonely` was an interesting read. I´m pretty sure the story will find it´s devoted crowd once it hits the shelves. But for me… I wasn´t entirely impressed. A Curse so dark and lonely

Beauty & The Beast belongs to one of my favorite fairy tales. I´m just a sucker for Stockholm syndrome romances. But this book leaned more towards ACOTAR. Which is fine. I didn´t have the hots for ACOTAR ( or for the series, for that matter ) but I did like what Brigid Kemmerer did with the ideas from ACOTAR that inspired her.

(Note: I´m just assuming the author was inspired by A Court Of Thorns And Roses. I could be wrong. I could be right. It just feels like the author was heavily inspired by Sarah J. Maas´s books )

With that being said:

I did enjoy `A Curse So Dark And Lonely` to a certain degree. It has it´s adventurous moments. It´s cheasy. There was a romance.  Things I appreciate when reading fantasies.

What I truly enjoyed were:

  • The details. The author has a knack for coloring out details. I felt there was no detail overkill what so ever.
  • The strong characters.
  • The plot twist. Although the story was predictable, I still enjoyed out the story panned out.
  • This is an admirable sized story. One I read through with ease due to it´s great pace.

Yet, there were some things about the story / it´s characters I had troubles accepting:

  • The Heroine´s disability. Harper, a bad ass teenager, suffered from cerebral palsy. Although this was mentioned more than once throughout the story I still felt like it was added dead weight. Unnecessary. While I´m not against including characters with certain disabilities… I´m not for including a disability for the sake of drama. Harper´s cerebral palsy did not affect the character nor the story in any way.
  • The Hero wasn´t convincing. I´m all for screw – up Heroes to see the light but for me, Rhen didn´t come across as genuine even when he saw the light.
  • The story, as a whole, felt a little flat and it also felt like it was all over the place. This is a fairy tale retelling. I should be sitting on the edge of my seat from start to finish. I should have suffered with and for the characters and I should have lived through their personal hell. I should have, but I didn´t.

This might sound confusing but… I didn´t think `A Curse So Dark And Lonely` was a terrible read. It wasn´t what I´m normally used to and it certainly wasn´t what I had expected. I´m sad to say that this story didn´t touch me the way I hoped it would.

Would I recommend this read? For fans of ACOTAR, absolutely. For fans of fairy tale retellings, yes. If you´re picky ( like me ) then, no.

Would I buy this book? Probably not.

The Cover – 5 stars: I fell in love with the cover the moment I spotted it on Netgalley.

The Story – 3 stars: A little flat. A tiny bit scattered. I liked it but would have like it more if there was a little more structure and depth.

The Characters – 3 stars: I´m torn. The main characters were strong but they had sides to them that either didn´t fit or didn´t feel genuine. I liked them but I also didn´t feel enough for them.  The sub characters were great, though.

My emotional state after finishing this read: Not impressed.

I´m giving `A Curse So Dark And Lonely` by author Brigid Kemmerer 3 out of 5 stars.

3 stars
