Book Review: What We Do In The Light – Stylo Fantome

Just one month ago, Valentine O’Dell got her heart ripped out – yet another problem to add to her rapidly growing list. Between fighting to bring her sick grandmother home, searching for a new apartment after being evicted, and trying to figure out how exactly she’s going to pay for everything, she doesn’t have time to cry over a broken heart.

Then Ari Sharapov walks back in and tries to solve everything.

Ari may have gained a little more control in his life, but there’s still one area he doesn’t have a grip on – Valentine refuses to believe anything he says. Gone is the girl who wanted someone to take care of her, and in her place is a woman who’s willing to take everything he has to offer, but without giving anything of herself in return. He’s used to fighting battles in a courtroom, but convincing her of his feelings will be his biggest struggle yet.

Maybe it’s time for this relationship to be brought to light.

Well… * takes a deep breath *  Let´s just say I´m bummed about  `What We Do In The Light`( book #2 ) by author Stylo Fantome.

The whole story was a little lackluster. All the tension from book #1, `What We Do In The Night`, was gone. Key characters suddenly disappeared from the pages ( only to be mentioned shortly towards the end ) and the focus was more on the questionable back-and-forth relationship between the romantic couple.

The constant “Yes! Oh, wait… NO! Oh to hell with it- Let´s give it a try. Meeh, I changed my mind.” drove me nuts.

Problems were easily solved with money.

The main characters ( romantic couple ) had no clue how to leave each other alone ( which would´ve been in everyone´s interest ). The actual threat of the story was… there was none. Any possible threats were removed, thus leaving the indecisive lovebirds to support the book with their unnecessary shenanigans. Their characters were beautifully created in book #1 but they weren´t strong enough to carry their story alone.

All in all, I´m bummed. This installment sort of ruined the uniqueness book #1 provided.

The Cover – It´s pretty. And the title is catchy.

The Characters – The few who remained weren´t putting much effort.

The Story – It´s a no from me.

My emotional state after finishing this book- Disappointed.

My Thoughts 2

It´s truly a rare moment when you favor book #2 more than book #1. Maybe it´s because I read `His Wounded Light`( The Light In The Wound #2 ) by Christine Brae before I read `The Light In The Wound`? I´m not entirely sure but I will say this:his wounded light

I totally enjoyed this book. It was deep. It made me say “Oh shit.” more often than I thought it ever would. It´s one raw piece of romance that seeps into your bones and stays there.

This book confronted me with real life issues I didn´t necessarily want to be confronted with.

You know- Those situations where you have to make life changing decisions? The “What would happen if this and this or that would happen to you/to us…”

This book has those types of situations and it´s not pretty to read about. But even life´s ugly sides can turn an everyday romance into something great.

There was so much tension in this book. So much devastation and longing and fear. I´m telling you, it´s deeper than the first book by a long shot.

And that´s basically what I loved about this story. It has more of everything.

  1. The pacing was much better.
  2. The character development was great.
  3. The issues dealt with were brutally realistic
  4. The romance / romantic aspect was captivating

You felt the love between the main characters. You felt the nasties this couple went through because the author painted out a horrific picture of it all. She made me believe with the right words / the right emotions the characters felt. I know this because I personally have dealt with at least one of the included issues myself and have seen another of the included issues happen to close friends.

As much as I enjoyed this read there were two minor things that didn´t sit well with me.

  1. The third-party. I didn´t necessarily like seeing one of the love interests from book 1 in this book. He felt out of place. The story itself was strong enough without him.
  2. The rich people party. This is not really something to complain about because, in the end, this is just a story. But I would have loved it if the characters were more poor – middle class. Would have made the characters more relatable. Not all of us can just effortlessly buy a plane ticket and fly across the country to clear our minds.

As I´ve said- this is a minor issue. I just don´t like characters with money. I´d rather see them financially suffer, like the rest of us.  Lol.

All in all I truly enjoyed this read and do NOT regret having read book #2 before book #1. While I understand that this might not work for others… it worked really well for me ( because I don´t care )

Would I recommend this book? Yes and no. This book carries topics such as: miscarriage, depression, drug abuse, and cheating. I can see readers being triggered left and right. If you´re anything like me and can stomach any of these topics then I´d say- go for it! It´s a romance with a great ending.

Would I reread this book? Yes.

The Cover – 4 stars: An improvement compared to the book cover for the first book.

The Story – 4 stars: Call me a schmuck because I do love myself a angsty story that puts me in a miserable state.

The Characters – 4 stars: Again, an improvement! I even liked the Heroine a lot more in this one.

My emotional state after finishing this read: Happy I read this one first because after the first one I don´t think I would have continued with the story.

4 stars

Review-Grievous ( Scarlet Scars #2 ) by J. M. Darhower

Book Description

Once upon a time, there was a girl who stopped believing in fairy tales after her innocence was stolen.

Morgan Myers is tired. So damn tired. Most people either push her around or brush her off, and she’s not putting up with it anymore. Determined to reclaim the life that had been stolen from her, she puts her trust in the last person she ever expected to: the notorious they call Scar. Morgan sees a side of him that few people seem to know—the man, not the myth. Lorenzo. And what she sees, she likes, a lot more than she thought she would.

But fairy tales aren’t real, as life likes to remind her. Some dragons, you just can’t slay, no matter how hard you fight them. And when hers comes back around, breathing fire, she’s forced to face some unimaginable horrors. But there’s a white knight in combat boots out there that isn’t afraid of monsters.

You see, it’s impossible to be afraid of something you see every day in the mirror.

My Thoughts

** ARC kindly provided by the author in exchange for an honest review **

And God said, „ Thou shalt not fall in love with a fictional criminal, especially with one who´s lost all his fucking marbles.“

But, hot damn!! I´m already so truly, madly, deeply in love with Lorenzo „ Scar“. I can´t help myself. He´s probably the worst and deadliest passionate nutcase I´ve ever encountered in a book, yet here I am, a 34 year old woman, desperately wanting to become apart of Lorenzo´s world. * ugly cry* ( I definitely have to think about what went wrong in my life…* cracking up* )

The story of Lorenzo and Morgan continues. * pulling hair * And just why did everything have to end? I mean- it sure as Hell felt like the end. I´m a mess. I don´t want to be a mess. I´m supposed to be happy but I´m not. I feel like the author gave me a gift and ripped it away again with the final words of the story. Damn it. That woman better keep on writing or I´ll turn into an even greater mess, suffering from an odd book hangover for only God knows how long.

( Need to get back to the story )

Where were we? Aah, yes. The story continues with Morgan still trying to get her child back from Kassian, the head of the russian mafia. And much to Lorenzo´s delight he helps Morgan. But one does not simply walk onto russian mafia territory and kidnap the prize. No. Getting back Morgan´s child proves to be a difficult matter and it takes a whole lot of craziness to get the job done.

When two mafia bosses collide… shit´s about to get ugly.

The story was intense, ruthless and so damn awesome.

Lorenzo was his logical / illogical self, doing unpredictable stunts at every turn… all while looking like a sexy, imperfect God. I shit you not- you never knew when he was going to kill someone or not or when he was going to be civilized. The important thing to know was- never fuck with him, especially when he was in his library ( I´m going to miss reading about that room.). So, his previous boredom from the first book ( Menace ) has vanished and he was happily occupied with half blindly swinging his gun at people.

`Grievous` is packed with action, tension, betrayal, sex ( which is mighty fine, if you ask me), death, suspense, forgiveness and above all- love.

The romance between Lorenzo and Morgan is not what you´d expect. No typical knight in shining armor, not damsel in distress story. What we´ve got here is a „ You´re fucking nuts, I´m not that crispy either but we got something good going.“ type of romance. AWESOME! So different from all the other love stories I´ve read so far.

There was one line, one moment in the story where I completely lost it.

„ Morgan,“ he says, his voice quiet as he whispers my name….. „Open your eyes, baby.“

You might think that those few words aren´t really special but when you read the story and get to know these people and read what they went through together you understand the significance of those words. And when you do I dare you not to let out a little noise of disbelief. * sigh * So touching and just….$/()(/%&$%§“§$§%$&%/& Everything after that just clicks into place and you KNOW. You just know.

And the end….Holy Heaven! I loved it. I can´t say anything about it without giving the story away so you´ll just have to take my word for it. It´s so satisfying.

I might be a little over enthusiastic about this story but I don´t care. I´m in love and that might never change. This is my favoite story written by my new favorite author.

I recommend this story to everyone who wants some adventure in their romance.

The Cover – 3 stars ( Meeh, not feeling this cover much.)

The Story – 5+ stars ( I´d need to write an extra review for another round of love gushing. Great read. I´ll have to get myself the paperbacks for my sacred bookshelf )

The Characters – 5+ stars ( I love how crazy these folks acted and how normal they thought their lives were. Lorenzo is a brilliant character. )

My emotional state after finishing this read – I want to high five the author for writing such a brilliant story.

I´m giving `Grievous` ( Scarlet Scars #2 ), by the awesome J. M. Darhower, 5 out of 5 stars
