50 Days Until RARE ´19 London

Only 50 days left until RARE ´19 London!

Hard to imagine that in only 1200 hours I´ll be hopping from one author table to another with my two trusty book chicks.

The last time I posted a milestone post was when we hit the 100 days mark. There, Brina @Brina And The Books and I talked about our unicorn authors and who else we´re looking forward to meeting at the author signing.

This time my book bestie and I teamed up again to reveal our preparations for the event.

It´s been kind of a back and forth with this author signing event for me. The first thing I had to secure were tickets- The rest will be a piece of cake. A piece of triple fudge cake with extra chocolate sprinkles.

So what have I been doing to prepare for this event?

Normally, I´m the type of person who has all the time in the world until no more time is left. Then I run around like a headless chicken and panic. This time is different, though. I´m going in P.R.E.P.A.R.E.D. Because I´d like, for once, for things to happen smoothly. I don´t want to encounter any bumps along the way. My grand plan? A Check List.

Prep rare

Tickets for the event:

Flight:

Hotel:

Get my hair done:

List for Unicorn authors:

Those are my essentials. My must-haves or else why bother. The tickets were the first thing we purchased. Then we went ahead and marked all the authors we´re dying to see ( the list is real, y´all ). Since I travel a lot I always have power banks in a bag so there won´t be a problem with that. Comfy shoes are a MUST HAVE. a) I´m in London. I´ll be putting some miles behind me. b) I´ll probably be standing most of the time at the event.

Then there´s the issue with my hair. Does anyone remember what Madonna looked like back in the ’80s? Yeah. That´s what I have. I´ve been married to my flat iron ( or straightener ) since I stopped ironing my hair with a clothes iron.

madonna
Nope.

Money has been an issue ever since the tickets were bought. How many books do I want to buy? How many can I afford? How many books can fit in my suitcase? Do I need 2 suitcases or a suitcase and carry-on? An extra duffle bag? This is why I decided I won´t buy more than 10 books at the event. 1 book costs about 10 smackers. Ten is a good limit, I think. Besides- I just can´t carry more than 10 books, including my own luggage, around with me.

The flight: In preparation for my flight I had to think long and hard about what I wanted. I´m flying in from Germany. That´s a 1.5-hour flight. To fly in early on Friday or late? I have no flipping clue. All I know is that I have to get my butt in gear or else I won´t be able to get a flight at all.

Don´t get me started with a hotel room. I have yet to book a place to stay at.

My inner 20-year-old is having a field day knowing I´ll be without my kids and husband for a few days! * sigh * It´s been so long since I had a moment for myself. So, the RARE weekend will be a whole other experience on so many levels for me.

From what´s been posted in RARE´s social media groups some authors are offering pre-order books for the event. I´ve decided against this for a few reasons:

  1. Sometimes books don´t arrive with the authors and that can lead to an author not having books to sell/to have the pre-ordered books with them. I´ve seen this happen.
  2. I like the unknown. I´m that type who likes to talk to an author and ask them questions

I need a romance with relatable characters. Preferably characters that are close to 30 years old. Do you have that? You don´t? Then pick a book you´re most proud of and I´ll buy it.” ( of course, I only do this with authors I´m not well acquainted with) This isn´t just about wanting to read books and have those books signed. I´m at RARE to support authors as well.

A little chat gives me and the author the opportunity ( in 5 minutes) for book talk and maybe the casual small talk. I tried this at the Berlin ´17 signing and it worked beautifully.

I also won´t be taking any books to the event to have signed because… Well, it wouldn´t make sense for me.

To sum this up- I´m going into this signing half prepared, wearing sweats and sneakers, sporting fashionable era-appropriate hair to see my favorite authors and meet one ones. What an impression I´ll make, huh?

To see what my book babe Brina@Brina And The Books has done to prepare for RARE London ´19 just click here. I promise she´s much better at this preparation thing than I am ( because I´m like a total loser with these things )

Okay, I guess that´s it for now. Until next time, my dear bookish Padawans.

Sending you much love,

What an impressive line – up

Personally, I´m not sure if I should weep with joy or feel financially screwed beyond repair. But we´re talking about books. Books I´d like to have.

Actual footage of me at an author´s table

So, who am I looking forward to meeting/see/say hi to?

It´s time to introduce my personal unicorn authors.

lesley

`Carnage` was my first Lesley Jones read and I can´t say I´ve ever read anything like it before. Brutally emotional in a crude and beautiful way. `Carnage` isn´t for the faint of heart, nor are the other books in the series ( check out my review here )

I met the author back in 2017 at the RARE Berlin signing and even got myself a signed copy of Carnage. I´ve put some extra $$ aside in case Lesley Jones is selling other books at the London event.

Monica

Monica and I go WAY back. I can pride myself by saying I was the first who created and hosted a book blog tour for her, back then, first book release `I surrender`. I´ve been a fan of the lovely and charming Australian author for the past 6 or 7 years and continue to be a fan of her incredible romances. She´s THAT good.

Since it´s hard for me to visit any book signings I hardly get to see any authors in person. Well, I made it my mission to meet Monica at the RARE ´17 Berlin signing. It was a mission accomplished. My hopes for the London signing? To finally spend all the cash I saved for the rest of Monica´s paperbacks ( should she bring any with her ).

Jessica

I did an actual happy dance in my living room when I saw Jessica Sorensen’s name on the attendance list. This will be my first time meeting the author. This will also be the first time I won´t need to purchase a book ( s ) at a fav author´s table because… I already have all her books. I might get a picture with the author, though. And maybe I´ll even get a chance to profess my undying love for her books. We´ll see…

Either way, I´m excited and I´ll probably won´t shut up about it anytime soon.

Of course, the list of must – meet authors is a tad longer…

A small list of 8 authors compared to the number of authors attending, I know. But this just means I get a chance to introduce myself to new authors and in return, see all the goodies they have for us desperate book loving romance readers. I seriously can´t wait.

Be sure to head on over Brina and the Books and see who Sabrina´s unicorn authors are for the RARE ´19 London event. Don´t forget to leave my book bestie some book love ( and virtual chocolate ). Drop a comment and leave her a like while you´re at it. ❤

Do you have a unicorn author? Whether he/ she is on this list or not… Share them in the comments down below. Let´s chat about our unicorn fav´s! ❤

I hope you all have a wonderful day. Don´t forget to share the book love.

RARE ´19 London Romance Author & Reader Event, I´m Coming!

I´ve waited ages, AGES ( since August, really ), to share this news and now I´m going to blurt it out: I´m attending the RARE ´19 London book signing event.

For those of you who don´t know what RARE ´19 London is…. I´ll get to that after this next announcement.

I won´t be attending the signing event alone. My girl, Sabrina @ Brina And The Books  and my bestie, author of the brilliant The Whitechapel Chronicles and the award-winning story HedoschismLindsey Clarke will be joining me on this huge author signing adventure!

I can hardly contain my excitement! Me and my chicas, on the loose in London on September 21.

But before I put you guys through a full blown teenage meltdown… Let´s start with what this post is about ( because it´s not just about me going ape-shit over a signing event ).

What am I even talking about when I say I´m going to RARE?

RARE is short for Romance Author & Reader Events. It´s a book signing. A fun one. For me, this is my third RARE event. I was at the very first one ( done… Meeh, I can´t remember ), my second event visit was in 2017 at RARE Berlin, and now… I´ll be attending my third and probably final RARE event. But who cares about that right now. Important to know is that I´ll be going.

RARE I´m going to unicorns

Meet My Unicorn Romance Authors!

That´s right. Authors from all across the globe will be attending. To be exact- 150+ authors! That´s a reason to faint on the spot, wouldn´t you think? If you´re a romance advocate, definitely!

Won´t you look at that lineup!

rare attendee banner

To be honest- I´ve read quite a few books from close to half of the authors listed in the lineup. The other half? No flippin´clue but I´m looking forward to meeting some new authors and letting my grabby hands on the loose.

And being the good book blogger I am I couldn´t resist looking up the authors I´m not familiar with beforehand. Looks like I´m going to find out for the first time in my life what being penny less really means.

I´ll have no money and no shame. But I´ll have a shit load of books!

With 150+ authors I´m bound to help my already thin wallet become thinner. But that´s okay, right? It´s not like I´m going to throw my money out the window. Going to a book event means I´ll be making an investment. A good one. ( And one day I might even believe that ) Because which romance reader can resist buying books from such a huge and amazing lineup? Certainly not me.

Aside from wanting to meet new authors and catching up with others I´m also looking forward to meeting new people in general! The place will be infested with readers and book bloggers and I´m one of those people who´ll talk to anyone who doesn´t look like he / she will want to murder me.

Not to forget the awesome people I chat with online! To be able to see these people in the flesh will be something fab!

If you´re going to the RARE ´19 London event please stop and say hi! I´m the short blonde with an american accent wearing black. Lol. ( no one will ever find me with that apocalyptic description ). If you´re not going to the event but would still like to meet up over the weekend… I´m available for a hot chocolate and cake! Let´s meet up! ❤

See you in September 2019, bookish Padawans! ❤

Review- RARE ´17 Berlin Book Signing Event

There are different types of book signing events. There are the ones we all know from back in the days, where authors had a table at a bookstore and signed tons of books for their fans.(Good thing  is – those signings still exist. They´re rare…but every now and again published authors pop into a bookstore and do a signing. * YAY *)

In this Era, book signing events have become more interesting, to say the least. Due to the massive amount of self-publishers ( and their wildly growing fan-bases ) alot of author events have turned into something bizarre ( and that´s putting it mildly ).

Book signings are said to be a great way to meet your favorite author ( maybe even hold a chitchat with them for 2 minutes ) and get your books, kindle covers, boobs and scrapbooks signed. Some signing events also offer full weekends of drinks, parties, meet & greets, and other fun stuff for readers and bloggers. Which is like- the ultimate thing for any book nerd!

Of course, those events aren´t for free. The prices for tickets can be from $10 – $400 , depending on which signing event a visitor decides to go to. In my opinion… I´d rather buy books worth 400 smackers than go to an event that costs that much, plus paying for a hotel room and traveling has to be taken under consideration, too- Unless you´re up for snoozing in your car. BUT…I was told that those highly expensive events were totally worth the money ( I shall never find out ).

I´ve been to quite a few book signings in my life but none have left such impressions as the last 2 I´ve visited. That is why I´ll focus on the last 2 bigger book signing events, here, and I´ll compare them.

I´m generally a happy person. I love to laugh and all that. And I´m also ALWAYS under alot of stress ( work, family, household, bla bla bla). When I´m at a signing I like to think I´m treating myself. Taking a break from being a highly responsible adult and having some Morgana-time without my babies actually helps me recharge enegery. I don´t need a 2 week vacation away from the family. A day or even a few hours can also work wonders.

But when I´m surrounded by madness it´s hard to think I´m treating myself in any way. It´s also impossible to enjoy my Morgana-time away from the family when I´m in a room surrounded by nearly 500 women who run around like headless chicks ( who also sporadically scream from the top of their lungs from excitement) That´s not book heaven. It´s definitely not my idea of having a good time.

And that´s exactly what happened at my first romance book event a few years back in London. Crazed women rushing from author table to author table in hopes of spending endless minutes with their favorite authors. It felt like I was in the Mean Girls movie with 100 Regina George clones.

After that unholy event I swore to never attend a romance book signing event ever again. I valued my sanity far too much to deal with another day of chaotic book women.

Years have passed and the nightmare from the past event eventually faded until I spotted an ad for another romance author event. RARE ´17 Berlin.Rare

Berlin? My heart melted. There was a romance book signing in the country I live in! I didn´t have to leave the country to visit a book signing and I could get a hotel room and I could….. Then it hit me. No. I swore I´d never put myself through another round of disappointment. But the author lineup for the RARE ´17 Berlin event was AWESOME! There was no way I could stay away.

After a week of back and forth I decided to give romance book signings another try. Why not, right? It´s been a few years since the last one. Readers / fans change. ( or, I hoped they did ). I wasn´t 100% convinced but I kept thinking happy thoughts. Everything was going to be alright.

After all- who would want to miss out on meeting Jodi Ellen Malpas, Monica James, Lesley Jones, Kandi Steiner, etc, etc? No me.

After a gruesome 5 hour drive from Frankfurt a.M. To Berlin I finally arrived. My hair looked like squirrels tried to braid it ( driving with an open window cannot be recommended) but I didn´t care. I was on a book mission, not trying to win a beauty contest. As long as no one noticed the chocolate stains in the crotch area I was good to go and halfway presentable. ( I do not recommend eating a chocolate croissant while driving on the Autobahn, either )

Needless to say- I arrived looking like a crazed forest witch, ready to spend time and money.

3 hours, 10 signed books and 6000 spoken words later I reached my limit and decided it was time to go home ( because I totally forgot to book a hotel room ). I wanted to spend some quality time with my newest reads!

And guess what? My fear was…gone. I was confronted with peaceful, nice people. The authors were wonderful. Everyone was smiling, chatting and just having a good time. I was shocked beyond belief! Hof was this possible? The last book signing event was a nightmare. Rare ´17 wasn´t. RARE ´17 Berlin was civilized, organized and just a great place to be.

Was I happy? Definitely. The event was a total success for me. Would I visit another RARE book signing?

Yes. I would.

Ticket price 36.87 Euros

Location – Hotel Estrel in Berlin

Author count – Roughly around 60 ( give or take)

Atmosphere-  Friendly

The authors- The ones I was able to meet were such sweethearts.

My biggest regret- Forgetting my hair brush at home. Forgetting to take pics with all the authors I talked to.

My mood from beginning to end-  Excited to happily exhausted.

All in all a wonderful event filled with awesomeness! Until next time, RARE!

And now – let´s take a look at what the forest witch looked like with the awesome authors! Have fun!
