No matter how cruel it’s been in the past, I’ve never been able to flip fate the bird. I’m a romantic at heart. So when fate drops a leather-bound journal at my feet, I know I should walk away.
I don’t. I pick her up, bend her spine, spread her pages. From the first word, I’m a goner. The owner didn’t give me access to her most intimate desires, but I devour them anyway. Her private darkness, her candid, explicit poetry—it all goes down like warm milk. And from that point forward, I drink, eat, and sleep her.
I went to his apartment and let him take my picture. Just once, to see how it would feel. I’m not his to look at, to inspire, to touch, but when he watches me through his lens, it gives me a high I don’t want to come down from…
My journal is the one place I can be myself—as long as I can tie it up and put it away when I’m finished. But when Finn undoes the bow, he pulls strings that could unravel each of us.
I´m not sure what has happened but Jessica Hawkins´ stories are not as powerful as they once were. Or, at least that´s the impression I have.
`Yours To Bare` was an okay read. Nothing more. There were tids and bits I liked but other than that- the story felt less emotional, ALTHOUGH is was filled with all sorts of feelings.
And that´s the problem. This author usually has the emotional part down and can make a readers stomache turn with her words. Where did the feels go? It´s not like the emotions were there and disappeared. They weren´t fully there to begin with.
Also, Finn ( Hero ) wasn´t convincing enough for me. His character was introduced in `Slip Of The Tongue` and I actually enjoyed reading about him but in this one…. not so much. A shame, really. He comes across as a guy who falls in love hard way to fast ( which he does ). Even if it´s explained why he´s the way he is I think his story wasn´t necessary.
As for Halston ( Heroine)- She seemed divorced from reality. I could not relate to her nor could I sympathize with her.
All in all not a bad read. A reader can get by easily and even enjoy the story. It just didn´t do anything for me. I would recommend `Yours To Bare`. I wouldn´t re-read it, though.
The Cover – 5 stars ( As always, outstanding image and colors)
The Story – 3 stars ( Not a bad idea but I would have liked for less B/W storytelling )
The Characters – 2 stars ( Not relatable. I couldn´t even build a connection on any level with them)
My emotional state after finishing this read – Indifferent
I´m giving `Yours To Bare` by Jessica Hawkins, 3 out of 5 generous stars.
